An alternative and more positive story is that people used to have an SUV and then buy a Prius and garage the dirty, evil SUV - or more formally we would want to know the conditional probability of owning a Prius/hybrid vs. a non-hybrid, given that the first car a family owns is an SUV. I am not sure which effect dominates.
